The 22nd International Festival of Raleigh, North Carolina, promotes once a year ethnic cultures around the world. Malagasy fox residing in NC - headed by Mialy Rabe - were part of this 22nd promotional edition two days in a row november 3 & 4, 2007. Fourty participants, among them the malagasy - the participants are called only by their names of origin presented handcrafted arts from Madagascar for the others: ethnic dances, food, and music were part of their contributions.

"Ethnic groups"
There are 18 officially recognized malagasy ethnic groups living in Madagascar: merina, betsimisaraka, betsileo, tsimihety, sakalava, antandroy, tanala, antaimoro bara, antanosy, antaifasy, sihanaka, antakarana, betanimena, bezanozano, mahafaly
"Arendrina Taratasy"
handcrafted lampions, mostly ball-shaped, made with plain or colored paper with designed attractive motifs. The candle, supported by metal string serves as handles. Kids and adults make their "lampion procession" every June 26 to celebrate Madagascar Independence.
"Baobab tree"
Fat trunked-tree, living mostly in Madagascar. One tree may contain 120,000 litres of water. Its leaves and roots are used for medicinal purpose. It features in ancestor respect rituals and fertility rites. It lives up to 2,000 - 6,000 years (shown here supporting small bags).

"Lemurs"
Dark eyes, long limbs, flexible toes and fingers, long nose and big tail are lemurs characteristics. They come in different sizes and colors. There are 50 species, 17 of which are endangered. They have an excellent sense of smell and can survive only in Madagascar.
"Valiha"
Traditional musical instrument equivalant to cithare tibulaire. Length 1.2m, diameter 10 cm, surronded
with metal strings. Made of Bamboo with some
movable pumpkinwood bridges implanted in to
support the strings and to tune the instrument.
